TREATMENT
STEPS
A person
has recognized and admitted a problem in himself or a loved one
and has contacted the ASAP Family. What happens next?
A Complete
Assessment is Made
Exact assessment
of a problem is the most important element to being able to provide
the best treatment.
Upon being
admitted to an ASAP Family program, A person is given an in-depth
interview by Neuro-psychiatric and Bio-psychiatric experts. The
assessment test many levels of health, including: medical, psychiatric,
psychological and physical.
An Individualized
Treatment Program is Designed
An individualized
treatment plan is then made, according to what the assessment revealed
to be the person's specific needs. That person's family and extended
family will be an essential part of the treatment program.
Each patient
will have a structured daily schedule of activities and therapy,
starting at 7:00 am and ending at 11:00 p.m. He/she is treated comprehensively
-- with therapy and activities to challenge the body and the mind.
While on the
unit, the patient will work intensely through individual, family
and group therapy and recovery groups. Within these groups, the
patient will deal with issues of self-awareness, sham and guilt,
self-esteem, family communication and decision-making. They are
designed to attend to psychological problems, as well as to managing
stress and improving daily living skills.
The physical
aspects of ASAP Family treatment include daily conditioning and
access to recreational sports and training with a specialist in
physical therapy/conditioning.
The Goals of
Treatment
Through therapy,
family interaction and activities, the patient will obtain, at a
minimum, the following goals:
- Recognize
that his drug-using lifestyle is destructive to himself personally
and to his family and friends;
- Gain some
insight into his personal or psychological problems which led
him to drug use and/or intensified his dependency
- Admit that
drugs/alcohol have made his life unmanageable
- Commit to
a healthy lifestyle and family environment
- Have a personal
plan for recovery that includes his family's recovery
Aftercare Treatment
Completion
of formal treatment is only the beginning. In order to promote a
smooth transition into a healthy lifestyle outside the program,
an aftercare program is carefully designed for each patient prior
discharge. Aftercare plans usually include: regular visits on an
outpatient basis, involvement in a self-help program and other activities
according to the specific needs of the patient and family.
Always, ASAP
Alumni and staff are available for support, advice and friendship.
Many activities are planned simply around learning to have fun without
the use of drugs and alcohol and serve to build a supportive network
of recovering people around every person completing ASAP treatment.
With such support,
every patient can live drug and alcohol-free for a lifetime.
Assessment/Evaluation
Interviews
Without charge,
ASAP counselors are available 24-hours to conduct confidential evaluations
of those suspected of substance abuse or emotional trauma. Through
these assessments, counselors determine the underlying problem and
its urgency and will then recommend adequate treatment options,
classes/counseling available in the community and financial options.
Drug screening may be advised during the evaluation.
Intervention
Even after
a problem is detected and then confirmed through an assessment,
it is sometimes difficult to convince a person or their family to
seek help. Overcoming denial and realizing help is needed can require
professional intervention. Free of charge, ASAP prepares family
and friends to intervene, then arranges and supervises the intervention
itself.
Our People
The ASAP Family
Treatment Program's Medical Director, M. David
Lewis, M.D., is an acknowledged expert in the field of drug
abuse, with considerable experience in the education and prevention
of substance abuse.
Under Dr. Lewis'
direct supervision is also an expert team of interdisciplinary specialist
with diversified backgrounds, including: medical doctors, psychologists,
psychiatrists, therapists, and psychiatric nurses.
Most of our
people came to ASAP for help with similar problems and have undergone
treatment. They stayed as part of the staff because they care about
and want to help others recover as they have. Common to all the
ASAP Family treatment team is personal dedication to the patient
and to the patient's family. They are more than just qualified.
They care.
Always Available
An ASAP Family
counselor is always available to answer questions and concerns regarding
drugs and alcohol, chemical dependency, the ASAP treatment programs
and other services. Sometimes just a friendly word is all that is
needed.
